The Crow's Nest

RECRUITMENT POSTER: Wanted---People who enjoy extreme weather patterns. Come to the Big “E” to experience the best of all climate conditions.

We don’t make the national headlines, but our weather conditions this summer have really allowed us to experience every extreme. We have had windstorms and lots and lots of rain. Flood watches and warnings scroll across our television screens almost daily. It was so cold the 4th of July that my sister-in-law Loretta wore her snowsuit to mow the lawn! The last few days we have had temperatures in the low 90’s with lots of humidity. It seems we complain if it is too cold, too hot, too wet or too dry.

I promised I would not complain about the weather in North Dakota since we chose to move back here. But, that doesn’t mean I can’t complain!! The grain fields are ripening and the garden is producing. Uffda, autumn is not far away. I say it all the time, but summer just seems to slip right by us.

It has been a very busy summer in the area. The communities of Fairdale, Adams, Lankin and Fordville all have or are celebrating their centennials this year. Two of my grandkids went to the parade in Lankin and came home with their candy sacks over-flowing. They were visiting from Kansas City and had never been to a small town celebration. They thought it was “very cool”!

July 23rd is the day for Edinburg’s ATV Mud Run and Mud Volleyball. This is sponsored by the Edinburg Fire Department. Washing machines will be humming around town when these events are over. The Business Club will sell brats and potato chips and the Girl Scouts will have beverages available. There will be a street dance that night. Our city-wide yard sale is set for August 6th. All of these activities help make Edinburg and the surrounding area a great place to live.

I mentioned last time that we are working to purchase new decorative street lights for our main street. We want our main street to be all “spiffed up” for the 125th celebration. The project will cost about $36,000. That is a mighty sum for our little community. We are looking at different ideas on how to raise money. One thought is to have an “adopt a pole” program. Individuals, families, businesses, etc. could donate money towards the poles. Brass plaques would be put on each pole with the names of the people who gave donations. Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated. We also are exploring the availability of grants and such.

Congratulations to Jesse and Kris Johansen. They had a baby boy yesterday. They named him Caden Lawrence and he weighed in at 8 lbs 4 oz’s. I am sure grandma Janet and grandpa Randy are on cloud nine---as well as great-grandmother Bonita Olson and great-grandpa and great-grandma Donnie and Ronnie Johansen!

I had my first Humira shot yesterday for Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had the nurse give it to me so I could learn how to give it to myself. I am not looking forward to that every 2 weeks. Thankfully, Rosie Denault gives herself the same shot so I can always “cry wolf” to her when I become too squeamish. I am counting on this very expensive medication to give me some relief from the aching and mostly the fatigue associated with RA. I plan to be “dancing on the tables’ at the street dance next weekend!!!

I better get out on the deck and help shell peas. Have a great day!

Thoughts for the Day

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.

All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays NO attention to criticism.

The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
